World Rally Cars are divided into 8 classes that make up Group A, as designated by the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA): the governing body of world motorsport. World Rally Cars are developed for competition use but unlike Formula 1 cars, they appear at first glance to look like normal production cars - except for their eye-catching exteriors. They are also road legal, allowing them to travel over the road sections. World Rally Cars are based on production cars, but drastic modifications are made such as replacing the engine, conversion from two-wheel drive to four-wheel drive, widening the body, adding a rear spoiler, and replacing the suspension plus the transmission. Once this is all done, there is little left in common with the original road car. All these changes transform a normal road car into a fire-breathing World Rally Car.
Bodyshell
The FIA regulations require a World Rally Car to use a standard production car's bodyshell. All unnecessary brackets and attaching plates are removed, to minimize weight, and the number of the spot-welds are multiplied to improve stiffness. In order to provide both safety and rigidity, a steel roll-cage is welded into the shell.
Engine
Teams must use a turbocharged two-litre engine that gives out power in the region of 300bhp. Although teams have to put a restrictor of 34mm diameter on the air intake, the combination of the high-pressure turbocharger and an anti-lag system outweighs any drawbacks. Modification to the major engine components such as the crankshaft, con-rods and pistons are allowed, but the actual cylinder block or head cannot be altered.
Drivetrain and suspension
Four-wheel drive combined with a five-speed semi-automatic gearbox is the typical package used on a World Rally Car and the SX4WRC is no exception. The drivers do not have to use the clutch pedal except when starting the car, because an electronic control unit is used in its place. The teams' engineers are constantly developing improved designs and settings for the drivetrains and suspension, with the aim of achieving the best handling possible on the various surfaces of the World Championship: asphalt, gravel, ice and snow. For the first time, this year's World Rally Championship runs on control tyres supplied by Pirelli and the desert of Jordan also joins the series
